FOMM: Jan Chapman

I've been a big fan of her flicks for a long time.
You've probably seen the Piano, but I would encourage everyone reading this to see Love Serenade (one of my all time fav Oz flicks,) and Suburban Mayhem.
Do it as a double if you can. There is a huge time and mood difference in the two films.

I discovered that she produced Sweet and Sour which is a tv show I enjoyed as a kid.

She see's her self as a creative producer.
To be deeply involved in the creative process.
An opportunity to get involved in all aspects of the production.
Trying to support the vision of other while having an influence.
But there should always be a central vision

she spends a lot of time sharing stories with her collaborators.
Communication is important and sharing stories is good for bonding.

Didn't start out as a Producer. Started out in the education dept of the ABC.
She learnt much from her time at the ABC and likes the team based work of tele. Film making can be a lonely occupation.
Did a bit of directing on shows such as Sweet and Sour. She was inspired to tell stories
Got into producing as she didn't feel that she was as good as the directors around her.

When one is sending off scripts, one should make an effort to send it to people you feel are like minded.

Current thinking is to split the roles of writer and director (sounds like that classic divide and conquer mindset raising its head.)
One can fire the director or the writer and still retain creative influence on the project.

A distinct director such as Jane Champion might not be as huge as a Spielberg, but they retain an allure.

Discovered that she liked working with other producers, such as when she has been an executive producer on projects.
