My theory on why Prometheus seems like one long 'set-up' for a sequel.

Ridley Scott directed the first Alien film, which was hugely successful and spawned a series of sequels.

I reckon he didn't get a 'taste' of the revenue from those sequels.

Could it be possible, that Ridley has decided to parlay the 'halo' he acquired having directed the original Alien (and Blade Runner) into a controlling interest in the Prometheus series, of which he will be guarantee that he 'gets his cut'?

There are also rumours of a Blade Runner sequel floating around.
