Ghost girl (working title)
Video reference
I visited Gloucester at Easter and recorded some footage.
I've compiled this footage together with some copyright free stock, to create a short 'taster' to focus minds.

Story outline
Exterior sitting on a large suit case by the side of a country road.
sounds of insects and cows
sun is blasting down
she is wistful, hopeful, expectant
guy pulls up in car
offers her a lift
she tries to lift her case, which is very heavy
he pops the boot, walks around bonnet and hoists the case into boot.
SLAMMING OF DOORS
Cut to interior car shot
She is in the car when he drops into the driver’s seat
she is weeping gently.
What’s up?
Nothing, I’m fine
she tugs a hanky from her cuff and wipes her eyes.
Mascara is running (did they have run-proof in sixties?) so she pops open a compact and redraws her eyes.
They talk about who they are.
She talks of her job as a air hostess and needs to get to Sydney to go to work.
Stop and a road side rest-stop,
Cut to exterior
he goes off to get some food and drink in the car
she wants her case so he places the suitcase on a picnic table while he goes off to get food
lot's of struggling while handling the case
comes back with food, they eat in silence
get back in car
SLAMMING OF DOORS
Cut to interior car shot
She sleeps
She wakes and they talk.
She needs him to fall for her so that he will take her to Sydney
she asks about him
run out of petrol
Cut to exterior
He opens boot so that she can get to suitcase.
Goes off to find fuel
comes back with can of fuel and she is sleeping in the car
SLAMMING OF DOOR
Cut to interior car shot
She wakes when he gets in the car
they talk
shots of car in scenery to break up the action in the car
car gets two flat tyres
he carries suitcase into bush while he changes the tyres
In the forest, lots of shadow
Is curiosity about her piqued by love, he sneaks back into the bush where he left her to see what she does. (maybe he climbs a tree?)
She is kneeling, her back to him, in front of the empty case holding a picture frame. she looks at the picture and fades a bit (classic double exposure effect)
he backs off and approaches her making lots of noise
by the time he gets to her she looks solid and is placing the frame back in the case.
He lifts the case and it's still very heavy.
SLAMMING OF DOORS

He adjusts the rear vision mirror so that he can watch her sleeping
he's falling for her now
he makes the decision to turn left at the bridge away from Sydney
he's taking her home
she awakes and realizes what has happened and fades away
he is distraught or scared or what ever, and has an accident
close up of screen of car vibrating violently,
lots of noise from speeding car
shot inside car, from behind hand on gearstick, looking up at his face
tracks of tears on cheeks that he brushes away
close up of face as noise increases
bang of collision and his eye speeds towards camera (homage to mad max)

Him
Motivated by loneliness and wanting a companion
lives at home but hates it and has moved out to the shed where he keeps the car
it's his brothers car. He's looking after it while his brother is in the U.S.
He cruises country towns picking up girls and looking for love
Her
Motivated by being trapped in her ghostly loop and desiring to escape
Grew up on a farm,
her dad died and her mom sold of most of the farm and works in town
she moved to the city and had a string of office jobs.
became a air hostess and discovered the world
Logistics

Everything outside car is all action (no dialog.)
Film actors in car on set. cold and first meeting to capture their first meeting.
Film on location with actors to set tone and to ground them
Second filming of in car dialog to see if we can capture better performances the second time around.

Everything is on the road or in the bush beside the road
To follow narrative Long locked off shot followed by closely cropped one to highlight detail.
Eg:
Long shot of guy changing the tyre of the car
Closely cropped shot of her looking back up the road and a sliver of his back just in frame as he changes the tyre.
When he comes back to find her
Long shot of her almost lost in the bush
Shot of him walking through the bush and crouching down
Closely cropped shot of her transparent and looking at a photo in a frame.
Shots of car winding down dirt roads
Shots of car driving from one side of the frame to others
Inside car in a studio
Internals of car lit to simulate light in from the on location shots
Non professional actors so multiple cams to capture as much footage as possible to reduce stress on actors
All dialogue in car so we can mike the car with anything we can find including using the mikes in the cameras.
Costume
• Boy wears all black, (Maybe blue jeans and white t-shirt?)
• Girl wears black skirt, white shirt (both of classic style,) blond hair, pony tail.
They are both dress in monochrome black and white as that is what ghosts wear.
She has a purple jewel which we quickly realize is her power in the world.
We shouldn't realize the connection until he is revealed as a ghost and we realize that the car is his power nexus.
Story arc visually
I'm thinking of starting in sunny open spaces such as rolling farm land...
(blues, gold’s, yellows, all should contrast with purple car)
they pass through a town...
Orderly, clean, white paint, red brick, green vegetation.
End up driving along tree lined roads to darken the tone, introduce 'tiger stripe' shadows across car and road.
(maybe this where we see the driving at sun set with tiger strip shadows causing disorientation with the audience? lot's of oranges and blacks)
Back to sunny open spaces when the viewpoint returns to where they first met.
