I've decided to spend a year learning how to use Side Effects Houdini.
Sometimes when learning a new app, it can be hard to keep the enthusiasm pumping.
So I propose a 'project' to keep the motivation grinding on, and I'd like to invite anyone who also wants to learn Houdini to contribute.
I've just completed a Foundation year at AFTRS and one of my exercises was to construct a story idea which you can check out here...

This details broad story brush strokes.
Trailermatic
http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=QPOrQuulpW8
A combination of trailer and animatic. built in a week in Poser, this was to give a 'vibe' to the piece.
I intend to reconstruct and add to the trailermatic using the Apprentice Houdini application.
As per Houdini licence, none of the assets created in Apprentice can be directly used for commercial purposes.
People who sign up to participate can contribute story, assets, animation, effects, sfx, score, or whatever.
All of the assets used so far are up for re-imagining.
Anyone who contributes to the project has a share in the copyrights.
All participants must consent to sign a form stating that in their contributions, they havn't infringed on any other copyrighted materials.
If your interested in learning bout Houdini for effects. Cool, there are lots in this treatment.
Just interested in modelling or character animation? Great cause we need everything from human characters, to blimps, to collapsing water towers (Houdini's plastic deformations look perfect for this job.)
Want to try a bit of everything? Not a prob. Modellers wont be locked into modelling, or animators can contribute to script or effects.
Want to direct a series of scenes? cool as!
I'll keep an overview of the development, and I reserve the right of veto. This is so that we don't get into any 'feedback loops' or 'terminal stalls.'
We use Google Apps to collaborate and keep track of the project.
The DLF mail-group could be seen as a peer review. We post models, animatic, etc, and get input and advice from to collective brilliance of the DLF
This isn't about being 'cutting edge,' or 'getting things perfect'
It's about learning to use a software package, adding to the portfolio, supporting each other, and contributing as a group to a single purpose.
All participants get copies of the assets, a finished edit, and will be noted on a credit list that will run more like....
Blimp model, John Doe
Director of scene 3, Jane Doe
Architects of collapsing water tower gag, Tom Dick and Harry
Why Houdini?
I wanted to make sure the entry point for participation was really low cost. Insisting that everyone run out and buy a Maya or Max licence would exclude some folks.
I was thinking of starting this project off with Blender as I wanted all participants to use the same 'legal' software.
Unfortunately Blender wont really be a contender till 2.5.
