Sunday covid 19 update : Flashback

Some spectacular winter sunshine has forced me outdoors all week so this is a very late weekly rant.

Rona has re-appeared in Aotearoa.
A friend wants the lock down that partitioned Auckland made permanent.
I love localised xenophobia.
Auckland for those who don’t know the city, is like a wannabe Sydney, which is like a wannabe L.A.
Everyone loves to hate that particular neighbour, or the town further down the tracks, or the state that shares a border.

Most of the country is at Level 2, which dosn’t change our lives much. Social distancing is required, hospitality has more cleaning chores, and supermarket one in one out queues are back.

This week I was a bit cranky when I got to the supermarket and found the rona queue.
Eventually I got to do the shopping and I felt a bit bad for the old dude circulating the isles who was wearing a very new looking face mask.
While selecting items from the shelves, I began formulating a conspiracy involving the National party (local conservatives in the upcoming election) but being forced to stand on a series of spaced out marks on the floor leading to the checkout gave me pause to ponder and reconsider. It would be playing into their fear mongering hands anyway.

Also the young bloke in front of me offered his spot to a codger with three items in his trolley including a walking stick. The banality of my 'tanti fit' melted my brain.

The conspiracy loonies have come out of the woodwork this time around. I'm wondering what's got their attention? I'm wondering if it's because this time the government has advised people to wear masks?
In the past I’ve quipped ‘follow the money’ when looking to discover what someone's motivations are.
Maybe I could say ‘follow the racism’ in this case?
What if the people who have been so upset by women wearing hijabs, are feeling threatened
by the directive to wear masks?

The weather has turned and I now have the time to write.
